non-language specific
Includes: very brief overview of interpreting; court interpreting
specifically; interpreter qualifications and talents; interpretation
techniques; modes of interpretation used in judiciary/court
interpreting; listening techniques; consecutive interpretation
techniques; note-taking techniques; simultaneous interpretation
techniques; on-sight translation techniques; mnemonics and memory; code
of professional responsibilities for interpreters in the judiciary
(ethics); where judiciary interpreters can work; the criminal justice
system; law enforcement; the courts; juries; corrections; certification
for interpreters in the U.S.; how to prepare self-study exercises; oaths
or affirmations; bail and bonds; common law vs civil or roman law;
burdens of proof; basic rights of a person charged with a crime; how a
person moves through the criminal justice system; civil lawsuits;
procedures for oral depositions

Court Interpreting I – Spanish/English
Extensive practice sessions in consecutive interpretation and sight
translation, some handouts. Lots of note-taking. Necessary legal
terminology in both languages, with examples from actual documents used
by interpreters or from which interpreters must interpret.

Court Interpreting II – Spanish/English
Extensive practice sessions in simultaneous interpretation and sight
translation, as well as further consecutive interpretation; some
handouts. Lots of note-taking. Necessary legal terminology in both
languages, with examples from actual documents used by interpreters or
from which interpreters must interpret. Practice tapes for simultaneous
interpretation texts will be made available in English.
Each interpreter must bring the following: Two tape recorders
(for regular audio tapes, no minitapes), 1 set earphones, 1 microphone,
1 blank 60 min. tape, extension cable to plug tape recorders into wall
sockets.
Community Interpreting I - Spanish/English
Techniques for consecutive interpretation and sight translation;
interpreter ethics. U.S./Latino/Hispanic cultural characteristics and
beliefs. Beginning terminology for community situations. Guided practice
sessions with handouts. Some role-playing by interpreters. Covers the
basics in the following fields: health care, social services, education,
special education, elder care and welfare programs, dental health,
mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse.

Community Interpreting II - Spanish/English
Further
interpreter ethics. Advanced terminology for community situations.
Guided practice sessions with handouts. Covers more advanced terminology
use and situations in the following fields: health care, social
services, education, special education, elder care and welfare programs,
dental health, mental health, developmental disabilities and substance
abuse.
